PAIN ~ FRIEND OR FOE For more articles, click here PAIN - FRIEND OR FOE By Dr. Saul Shaye Is headache a normal or an abnormal body response? Most of us would say it's an abnormal body response. Commercials for pain pills state the following: "Tell your headache to take a powder. This is strong medicine for strong pain. This delivers twice the pain medicine in half the time." All brag of their ability to get rid of the pain. What about the cause of the pain? Guyton's textbook of Medical Physiology defines the purpose of pain as follows: pain is a protective mechanism for the body; it occurs whenever any tissues are being damaged and causes the individual to react reflexly to remove the pain stimulus. Pain then is a normal body function. It is the body's way of informing us that something is wrong. It's telling us to fix the problem the cause, whether it's pressure on a nerve, spastic muscles, decreased circulation, tissue toxicity, constipation, or a host of others. Whatever the cause the pain is a normal body function to inform us that something is wrong and that we should fix it. When we take a pain killer for headache we're saying "body don't bother me" and the cause remains even if we're lucky enough to cover up the pain which a lot of the time remains anyway. On top of ignoring the major problem-the cause of the particular pain-the pain medicine usually causes other internal problems or side effects: nausea, diarrhea, bleeding and numerous other symptoms which really isn't too surprising as the drug is attempting to stop a normal body function without removing the cause of the pain. All of these are unnecessary as the pain is not the culprit-the underlying cause of the pain is. Misaligned vertebrae in the neck region cause most headaches. The subluxated or displaced bone causes nerve interference that inhibits internal function, causes spastic muscles and blocks proper circulation. Proper chiropractic care can alleviate the nerve pressure and thus allow the body to function as it was designed to without causing distressing side effects. Pain whether it is headache or abdominal pain is always an indicator.
Some causes of true pain (referring to any large interior organ in any
one of the three great cavities of the body) are: insufficient circulation
of visceral tissues, chemical damage (caused by a lot of drugs themselves)
to the surfaces of the visceral, spasm of the smooth muscle in a hollow
organ, distention of a hollow organ, or stretching of ligaments. In all
cases pain-the indicator-is a survival response. Therefore we can see that if, after repeatedly warning us of an internal
problem by pain impulses, we still ignore or cover it up with pain pills
then a lot of the time the body progresses to a worsened condition with
serious internal problems and a diseased state is reached. It may be complete
organ shutdown, arthritis, psoriasis, heart disease, kidney disease, or
numerous other conditions. In almost all, the body gave us indications
with pain way before the problem became too severe, but because of a lack
of insight or understanding the pain was ignored and the cause went untreated.
When the body informs you with pain-find and treat the cause! Don't put
off your health problems to a future date! Treat it while the cause can
be remedied simply whether by chiropractic care-to insure proper body
function via the nervous system, muscle acupressure-to remove abnormal
nervous pathways and release tension thus allowing proper circulation,
better nutrition-to supply the body with its basic building blocks and
at the same time not adding any harmful chemicals into the system, or
exercise which promotes proper body function. ~*~*~ To write to Dr. Shaye, please email him at: saulshaye@hotmail.com This address is checked several times a day and an answer will be forthcoming to you that day.
